Our group works on sustainable wastewater treatment for resource recovery and public health. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from Water Resource Recovery Facilities or Wastewater Treatment Plants were at 44Mtons CO2eq. We investigate partial nitritation/anammox process to reduce the energy cost and eliminate the additional of organic carbon for wastewater treatment. We also work on the synergistic algal-bacterial systems to capture CO2, remove contaminants and pathogens for water reuse, and produce biomass that can be used for biofertilizer or biofuels. In collaboration with Drs. Regan and Rezaee, we co-treat the organic wastes with acid mine drainage using bioelectrochemical process to produce H2 and recover metals simultaneously.
