	EMS Library to host Halloween-themed One Button Studio open house on Oct. 31 10/24/2017 The Fletcher L. Byrom Earth and Mineral Sciences Library (EMSL) will open a new One Button Studio (OBS) on Nov. 1. To celebrate the opening, the EMSL will host a Halloween-themed open house from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, in 105 Deike Building.
	Student EMS undergraduate uncovers over 300 fossils at local site during summer research 10/24/2017 While exploring for fossils with her father in the State College area in 2014, Penn State geobiology major Anna Whitaker discovered a fossil of a prehistoric starfish. The Whitakers brought the excavated fossil to the University to be analyzed. Mark Patzkowsky, professor of geosciences, identified the starfish as an ophiuroid, labelling it the first of its kind to be discovered in Centre County.

	Faculty Glass scientist Mauro joins Penn State, sets sights on shaping students 10/17/2017 Mauro is the co-inventor of three iterations of Corning's Gorilla Glass, a thin, durable, touch sensitive, cover glass that has been used in billions of cellphones, tablets and touch-screen devices worldwide. Mauro was one of multiple developers of an early iteration of Gorilla Glass, and dozens of other patented products, during his 18-year career at Corning before shifting this year to academia.
	Research Secretary of energy spotlights Penn State-industry rare-earth-elements project 10/17/2017 U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry highlighted the national importance of a new Penn State-industry collaboration during a recent visit to a Jeddo Coal Company mine in Ebervale, Pennsylvania. Along with Rep. Lou Barletta, of Pennsylvania's 11th district, Perry spoke at a press conference about the collaboration, which aims to extract rare resources from coal. The project is funded by the Department of Energy through the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).
